Podium finishes for CYC at 16 & Unders

The PEI Canada Games training team had several podium finishes at the CYA 16 & Under Eastern Intermediates held July 5th and 6th in Summerside PEI. For many this was their first regatta of the season and a few of the younger kids this was their first regatta ever. There were 48 participants in five classes.

Prince Edward island's top double-handed girls team, sailed single-handed against each other for this regatta. Juliette Bernard (4 first place finishes) and Monic Dagenais ( also 4 first place finishes), both from the CYC swapped first places finishes in the Byte fleet all weekend. The tie was settled in the very last race of the regatta, with Juliette taking the top spot.

The older sailors were competing in the Laser Radial class. Many potential Canada Games athletes were using this event to get a taste for conditions at the venue for the 2009 Canada Games. There were 11 competitors from three provinces and the United States. Eric Dagenais from CYC won the Silver Medal in the 16 & Under Class.
The largest fleet at the regatta was the Optimist fleet, with some of the top sailors in Canada. Charlottetown had four sailors in this fleet and for each of them the first time competing outside their home club. Their were two classes in this fleet, the top boat in the Gold fleet was Julien Fougere from Nova Scotia. The top boat in the Green fleet was Kevin Matheson from CYC in only his second regatta. Folowed clossely from his CYC teamates, Joshua Toombs finishing second overall, and Callum Russell MacLean tied for third place. The highlight of the weekend for the Charlottetown team was Kevin Matheson, 6th place finish overall, finishing ahead of many much older and experienced sailors from out of province.

Congratulations go out to all the athletes. There is not much rest for the sailors as they leave again on Wednesday for of the largest regattas of the season in Bedford Nova Scotia.
