Summer sailing classes will be offered to both members and non-members, and we are looking forward to a fun summer on the water and around the docks at CYC. The mission of the Charlottetown Yacht Club Junior Sailing program is to provide a safe, fun and empowering learning environment designed to develop the skills required for sailing; to promote personal growth and independence within the sport, to achieve proficient levels in boat handling and maintenance, and to develop decision making skills, while encouraging sportsmanship, leadership and team work. Our program is designed for students between the ages of 5 and 17 to introduce the sport and art of sailing. During the program, beginner students will learn basic sailing techniques from Sail Canada Certified Instructors using the CANSail program. More advanced students will learn about sailboat racing, and have the opportunity to participate in local regattas. Our ultimate goal is that each student will become active participants in the sport, and learn valuable lessons in self-confidence, teamwork, and respect for nature and fellow man. Safety is our main concern and is a priority. All students are required to wear life jackets while they are on the dock and sailing. No exceptions are tolerated. Our ultimate hope is that each student will become active participants in the sport, and learn valuable lessons in self-confidence, teamwork, and respect for nature and fellow man. Juniors are grouped by ability and there is a place for everyone including 8 year-old beginners, older 13 or 14 year-old beginners, right on up to the seasoned racer. Basic Requirements: Students must be able to demonstrate basic swimming skills. After registration has been processed you will receive a medical and a waiver form that must be completed and returned prior to the start of class. Students should bring a change of clothes (including closed toe shoes) and a towel to class each day. Instructional Equipment: The Charlottetown Yacht Club has 420 dinghies, Optimist Prams and several students have their own Bytes, Radials and Lasers. Classes: Classes are scheduled Monday through Friday between 9:00 AM and 4:00 PM Charlottetown Yacht Club thanks Subaru of Charlottetown for sponsoring the Junior Sailing Program.
