April to May: Clubhouse renovations

This model was built by A. Malcolm (Mac) Irwin. Mac and buddies would sail their models on Government Pond back in 30 and 40’s. West Kent school was close to the pond, so there were lots of kids watching. Honorary Commodore Ron White made new sails for the model many years later. Mac was one of the founders of the CYC when it was incorporated in 1938, Commodore in 1955-56 and later Honorary Commodore. He was a leader in the Charlottetown boating community from the 1930s onward. Mac built sail and power boats in his workshop at the Irwin Print building on Richmond Street. His 22 foot Mic-Mac design became a standard for racing in the Strait in the 1930s until it was replaced by the Snipe. Fred Small crewed for Mac.
April 30: Docks-In
On a chilly Saturday with a light north wind, CYC and Rowing Club volunteers moved the Hood docks from the parking lot into the water and assembled them. Staff and divers had already installed the outside docks.

June 18: Thunderstorm
A typical squally thunderstorm passed over CYC and Charlottetown from New Brunswick to the south just before 6 pm. The Climate Lab's weather station at CYC logged a brief wind spike to near 20 knots with gusts to near 30. The wind clocked direction rapidly around the compass, temperature dropped, heavy rain fell and barometric pressure rose. Then it passed and the sun came out.

September 24: Hurricane Fiona
September 24th was supposed to be the day of the Northumberland Strait Challenge race. Instead, the Island was challenged like never before by a pounding from Hurricane Fiona. Born off Africa, Fiona hammered the Caribbean then turned north and arrived a couple of days later in Atlantic Canada as a category 2 hurricane. Very strong north to northwest winds robbed power from 90% of Maritime Electric's customers across the Island and caused widespread damage. CYC infrastructure and boats were largely spared, thanks to the combined efforts of members and staff in the days leading up the hurricane. One large visiting catamaran weathered the storm very well in a web of heavy ropes in the Hood, and then continued on its way south to warmer winter waters. CYC had hoped to hold the Peake & McInnis Closing Regatta on October 1st, but there was so much damage in island communities that the Board decided to call it a season.

Sponsored by Peake & McInnis
On Saturday evening at Salt & Sol, members took a break from the massive ongoing recovery work to celebrate a terrific CYC100 anniversary season. Although the boating season ended early owing to Hurricane Fiona, the year was jam-packed with events and accomplishments. Music was provided by the Roger Jones Band. Members donated perishables to the Charlottetown Mutual Aid group, and made cash donations to the Red Cross. The federal government matched Red Cross donations for PEI recovery work.

- CYC’s Race Week Committee began planning for July 2023.
- Andrew Campion came back to help Reid with dock repairs.
- Late fall and winter wind and tidal surge exacerbated seawall aging triggered by Fiona, and the infrastructure committee worked to develop plans.
