April to May: Clubhouse renovations
In preparation for CYC100, volunteers and tradespeople spruced up the clubhouse with renovations. The washrooms and main hallway were updated. The Commodore's Room was turned into a members' lounge. The two small front offices were combined into a single staff office and retail space.

The model in the lounge got a new mahogany base preserved with tung oil. The model was built by Mac Irwin and looks like the MIC, a prototype he built prior to WW II, according to Harry Holman's Sailstrait blog post "Mac Irwin and the origins of Northumberland Strait yacht racing". Mac and buddies would sail their models on Government Pond back in 30/40’s. West Kent school was close to the pond so there were lots of kids watching. Honorary Commodore Ron White made new sails for the model some years ago.

April 30: Docks-In
On a chilly Saturday with a light north wind, CYC and Rowing Club volunteers moved the Hood docks from the parking lot into the water and assembled them. Staff and divers had already installed the outside docks.

June 18: Thunderstorm
A typical squally thunderstorm passed over CYC and Charlottetown from New Brunswick to the south just before 6 pm. The Climate Lab's weather station at CYC logged a brief wind spike to near 20 knots with gusts to near 30. The wind clocked direction rapidly around the compass, temperature dropped, heavy rain fell and barometric pressure rose. Then it passed and the sun came out.

Festival July 28-August 1: 2022 Around the Island race, starting from CYC in Charlottetown

The last around the island race was in 1997. For the first time in the nearly 40-year history of this race, all the boats that started completed the race: 3 in PHRF Spinnaker and 1 in PHRF White Sail. The race is a more than 300 nautical mile circumnavigation of Prince Edward Island. Challenges include varying tides, winds, and around the clock watches. The first two spinnaker boats finished 5 minutes apart in corrected time! The winners of the spinnaker class were given their prizes on the deck of Spirit of Bermuda while Mischief continued to complete the final legs home later that night.

  • Danny Mosher (Laser) - ILCA Masters Atlantic Coast Championship, Shelburne Harbour Yacht Club.
  • Samantha Brown and John Roberts, PEI Sail Team, Canada Games, Ontario.

September 24: Hurricane Fiona

September 24th was supposed to be the day of the Northumberland Strait Challenge race. Instead, the Island was challenged like never before by a pounding from Hurricane Fiona. Born off Africa, Fiona hammered the Caribbean then turned north and arrived a couple of days later in Atlantic Canada as a category 2 hurricane. Very strong north to northwest winds robbed power from 90% of Maritime Electric's customers across the Island and caused widespread damage. CYC infrastructure and boats were largely spared, thanks to the combined efforts of members and staff in the days leading up the hurricane. One large visiting catamaran weathered the storm very well in a web of heavy ropes in the Hood, and then continued on its way south to warmer winter waters. CYC had hoped to hold the Peake & McInnis Closing Regatta on October 1st, but there was so much damage in island communities that the Board decided to call it a season.

The hurricane's track was forecast to pass close to eastern PEI, with a wide cone of uncertainty. In the end, the track stayed east of Charlottetown, but remained a very dangerous and damaging storm.

October 1: End of Season Reception
Sponsored by Peake & McInnis

On Saturday evening at Salt & Sol, members took a break from the massive ongoing recovery work to celebrate a terrific CYC100 anniversary season. Although the boating season ended early owing to Hurricane Fiona, the year was jam-packed with events and accomplishments. Music was provided by the Roger Jones Band. Members donated perishables to the Charlottetown Mutual Aid group, and made cash donations to the Red Cross. The federal government matched Red Cross donations for PEI recovery work.

October 15: Docks out

A group of volunteers worked efficiently to get the hood docks out on a breezy Saturday morning. The number was diminished owing to competing events that day, and ongoing hurricane recovery efforts across the Island.

November 18: CYC100 2022 Awards Ceremony and Christmas Party, sponsored by Peake & McInnis

Mary Beth McInnis organized a fun and typically Island-casual awards ceremony and Christmas party to close the CYC100 season. Doug Gaudet excelled as MC, always a challenging role. Dress code ranged from tuxedo to Christmas sweater, and everything between.

October to December: End of one season, cycle began again for 2023 -- CYC101

Through the fall and into winter, CYC's Board, staff and volunteers continued to manage the Club and prepare for the 2023 season.
  • Members worked on winterizing and storing their boats for the winter. Some prepared for winter cruises in far-away tropical waters.
  • Peter Williams supervised moving docks A to D into the hood for the winter. Under the direction of Manager Reid Barnett, Staff and volunteers began seasonal repairs.
  • CYC’s Race Week Committee began planning for July 2023.
  • Andrew Campion came back to help Reid with dock repairs.
  • Late fall and winter wind and tidal surge exacerbated seawall aging triggered by Fiona, and the infrastructure committee worked to develop plans.
